ABOUT IASI
Situated on south-east of Europe, on north-east of
Romania, Iasi is one of the biggest city of the country with a population of
around 350.000 inhabitants. Its administrative
surface is of 76 km² and the city surface is of 38 km²
Iasi is the most
important city from the east part of Romania, being thus the cultural, economic
and academic center of Moldavia.
History of Iasi
Starting with the
XVIIth century, Iasi was seen as an important cultural center;
Ancient capital of
Moldavia (North-East side of Romania)- the Royal Court was settled at Iasi on
the second half of XVIth century;
Located at the
crossroad of important commercial routes of Europe which related The Baltic Sea by the Black Sea
and Russia by Western Europe;
During the first
World War, Iasi was a center of opposition and in 1859 was the capital of the
first Romanian People Union;
The richness of the cultural patrimony attests its role of cultural and academic capital of Romania and its role of important religious center. Its patrimony is made out of 526 archaeological places, 20 memorial houses out of which 10 are museums and 580 historical and archaeological monuments, being named as well the Museum County of Romania.
