ABOUT SIBIU
Sibiu, previous called Sibiiu, is the capital and the biggest city of
Sibiu county from Romania. It is an important cultural and economic centre from
south of Transylvania. It has the title of martyr city. It has a population of
around 155.000 habitants.
The winter resort Paltinis is at 37 km
distance from the centre of the city and at around 100 km distance from the
glaciar lac Balea.
Sibiu has been one of the most
important and flourishing cities from Transylvania, being one of the main centre
of the Saxon colonies settled in the
area. It has passed in the last years through a significant economic and
cultural renascence, being today one of the cities with the highest levels of
foreign investments from Romania. It was
designated European Capital of Culture for the year 2007, together with
Luxembourg.
It can be considered Romanian
cultural capital thanks to the ancient traditions and thanks to the cultural
artistic patrimony that both the city and its surroundings posses. The works of famous as: Andreas Lapicida, Sebastian Hann, Johann Martin Stock şi
Frans Neuhauser can still be seen if one visits different areas of the city.
Tourism
Sibiu and its surroundings are one
of the most visited area of Romania. The historical centre is one of the best
preserved historical place from the country. Many walls and systems of
fortification are kept in a very good form. The historical centre is about to
become UNESCO patrimony. In Sibiu there are many museums that gather
collections of art, of paintings, decorative art, antropology, history,
archeology, naturales sciences that are organized around two complexes: the
National Museum Brukenthal and the National Complex ASTRA.
In Sibiu, we can go on the oldest restaurant from Romanian territory „Butoiul de aur" which started from the XVIth century is situated in the same building with the Stairs Passage.
