Craiova è un municipio della Romania di 302.601 abitanti (censimento del 2002), capoluogo del distretto di Dolj, ubicato nei pressi della riva sinistra del fiume Jiu nella regione storica dell'Oltenia.

 

 

ABOUT CRAIOVA

Craiova is the capital of Dolj County, named as well the ‘capital of Oltenia’.  The city had a population of 298.928 inhabitants (1st January 2009). The origin of the actual name is subject of several controversies and it is still a myth; the only sure thing is that the name comes from the Slovak "kralj" (king, emperor).

 

Localization: Craiova is situated on the south part of Romania, near the left bank of the river Jiu. It belongs to the Romanian Plane, more precise on the Oltenia Plane. The city is situated on the centre of Oltenia, at a distance of 227 km from Bucharest and 68 km distance from the river Danube

.

On the first two decades of the 19th century, Craiova enjoys an economical and urban development. An increasing number of the population deals with trades, commerce and public services. Craiova becomes a commercial, administrative and cultural point.

 

Starting with the years ’60, the city becomes a powerful industrial centre; different types of industries got developed such as: the building car industry, the flights industry, the chemical industry, alimentary, the electronics industry, the energetically industry.  One could mention among these the flights company Electroputere Craiova and the car’s company or the aggregate works from Isalnita.

Today, Craiova is an important economical student and cultural center.

Craiova is the second city, after Bucharest, in what concerns the number of old constructions: churches, houses, landowners, or other laic constructions. The most ancient construction from Craiova is the monastery  Coşuna - Bucovăţul Vechi. It belongs to the category monument religious construction from the Romanian Country.

The city has several point of attraction that satisfies all the tastes. From the old construction that dates from the Neolithic period till the modern restaurants, clubs open all nights, all deserve the attention of the ones who want to visit the surroundings. Another point of attraction is the Park Nicolae Romanescu which is unique in the country and of the most interesting achievements of this kind from Europe.

The International Airport Craiova has a well prepared infrastructure; the main concern is to improve the quality of the services, of the arrival and departure conditions.

The flights from the airport cover many destinations, in particular Italy but also airports from Greece and Germany.

The airports toward which there are done flights are:

·                     Greece : Athens

·                     Germany : Dusseldorf, Munchen, Stuttgart
